I tried doing that with Drumagog, it only allows a global adjustment of ADSR, not close-mic vs room. I also like the sample library that comes with slate, the flexibility of being able to edit ADSR for each sample layer is amazing, especially for the snare march, I reduced the attack so that more of the snare sizzle is heard. I like the intuitiveness of Slate Trigger. When played back at normal speed i do think the results were better.Ĭould be something helpful there, but i get pretty good stuff from protrig (i tried a few different trig softwares when getting my ekit going, it worked out best for me.)Īnd here's the same track with Trigger on just the snare ( and snare march in intro) Then record the midi output so that a bit 'more' of the subtleties in the performance were captured and outputted as midi. One trick i used to get round the problem of the hit interval of the triggers (protrig in this case has a minimum of 20ms which can be a touch too long for convincing rolls) was to reduce/slowdown reapers playrate on my recorded audio hits. I may in future keep a few midi files of good rolls which i can drop in to future projects and edit to taste.

Some bits i just played in again - better! was far easier.
#STEVEN SLATE TRIGGER INSTRUMENT EDITOR TRIAL#
it does a v.good job with rolls i feel.Įditing played-in rolls to tighten them up is troublesome as there is no reference point as to where a hit 'should' land or which should be soft so its simple trial and error. I was having to do some military style snare rolls etc the other day and went with my my e-kit which uses protrig & AD drums to play it in as i knew programming it would be nightmarish. Maybe adam can chime in and let us know how he deals with inconsistent dynamics?Įdit: i know you can adjust the velocities in trigger though:) So, i haven't found a good way around it except for pogramming parts of the performance which is, as i already mentioned, not everyone's preferred way of doing it. Now, you might not notice that inconsistency of how the drummer hits with the original, miced-up source-tracks but when you trigger samples it becmes way more obvious i think (don't know why that is though). Let's say even if i got trigger to trigger every note perfectly with exactly the dynamics the drummer played them (which is what we usually want) i find myself having to readjust like half of his hits because the dynamics were too inconsistent. I would prefer not to dig into programming the drum as midi yet, I'll keep that as last option though.Īnoter reason i like to programm rolls for example is controversial: I would prefer not to dig into programming the drum as midi yet, I'll keep that as last option colonel_claypool, thanks for the advise. I always prefer to buy/use drum replacer plugin that includes their own multisample & multilayer samples, as I find it quite a chore to create my own multilayers (such as for DrumReaplacer / ApTrigga / TL Drum colonel_claypool, thanks for the advise. Keeping in mind I still have 11 tracks to go, I think I'd be much happier to have Trigger to do the dirty work for me, then I can tweak the small stuff.Īdam, seeing that you do a lot of drum editing, do you use Trigger/DrumXchanger/Drumagog/DrumReaplacer/ProTrig/ApTrigga or do you use Reaper's native editing tools ? On the other hand, I'm seriously considering to take the plunge on Slate Trigger, the only thing holding me back is the iLok issue.

I've got 11 tracks more to go, I'll definitely prefer to go your suggested way. You can easily set all the notes to be the same note in the MIDI editor too so it will play nicely with your VSTi's mapping. After that, go through and fine tune anything that needs it, select all items on the track and run "create chromatic MIDI from selected items." You will get a velocity sensitive MIDI item with all your hits at the right velocity and you don't have to leave your host or worry about tempo maps and stuff. Just run dynamic split on a snare track for example, tweak the transient settings until it's 99% right and then split. FYI you can bypass Drumtracker by using Dynamic Split in Reaper.
